The 3DS. Mystery, intrigue, 3D. The 3DS is the soon-to-be new system Nintendo is producing. Fully equipped to give players a 3D gaming experience, it could just be the next biggest thing in gaming. Meet me after the jump for more info!
Well, here’s the 3DS. The 3DS decides to throw something entirely new at gamers: 3D handheld gaming. The 3DS is set to come out in March 2011, but chances are that the date will be pushed back, as I believe there will be a insane amount of defects and glitches that will have to be fixed for the final product that will go on sale.
The 3DS looks a lot like any other DS, you know, DS, dual screen? Even though it may look like a normal DS, there are quite a few exceptions. On the front, as shown in the picture, there is one camera, like the new DSi’s have. Only, this camera could potentially be used for face tracking. Which is pretty much how the 3DS knows how to be all 3D looking to you. On the front there are two more cameras. I will discuss their use in the “Extras” part of this article. There is of course a slider for volume, but in addition, there is a slider to control the depth of the 3D. Also, as most people who have ever seen a DS before would notice, there is the addition of the joy stick type object in the upper left corner of the bottom half. This opens up a wider variety of games and gaming options for the DS. Also, the system seems to look brighter in the demos, and all around looks much nicer than previous DS’.
From the looks of it, the games will be pretty damn good for the 3DS; and there will be plenty of them. I think that Nintendo will remake some of the classics, such as Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Starfox 64, etc. I also assume that Nintendo will produce the next games in their famous series on the 3DS; such as a Zelda, a possible Sonic, Mario, etc. Here is a list of some of the games supposedly coming out on the 3DS. Ones that interesting me was the prospect of an Assassin’s Creed on the 3DS. Which would most likely be a beautiful game. I think that game-wise, the 3DS is very promising, and could produce some very good and beautiful looking games.
I really don’t like 3D. Maybe it’s because most movies that are in 3D suck(Avatar, and Avatar: The Last Airbender). Much like Blue ray, I’ve always 3D completely unnecessary. But with gaming, I think it sounds pretty cool. I was really intrigued by the fact that they included the slider on the side of the 3DS to increase of decrease the depth of the 3D. So if the 3D really does bother me, I can always change it. From what I’ve watched and read, the 3DS has the specific “sweet-spot”, in which the 3D looks wonderful, but then, if one moves the 3DS, they are out of that sweet spot, and the 3D looks odd and is hard to look at. Possibly the single camera can trace a person’s facial movements and adjust to the movement quick enough as to not bother the player.
While some have said that the 3D will look like this (Note: This is not the 3DS).
I think that the 3D will be a bit more subtle. Not like the 3D people think of when they think of 3D movies, but sort of more eye catching and better graphics, rather than the movie type 3D. Either way, creating 3D video games sounds interesting, yet I worry about how bad 3D gaming could look.
Well, that’s about it. I am excited for the 3DS, but the presumably million dollar price tag will keep me away from it for awhile. I just hope that they release Shadow of the Colossus on it.
